What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the numbers, operations, and grouping described in a phrase or situation. They write an expression without solving it and explain what a given expression means.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write 3 × (8 + 4) for three times the sum of 8 and 4. The student can describe 24 ÷ (6 − 2) as 24 divided by the difference of 6 and 2.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on keywords and ignore the order described. They may reverse subtraction or division, leave out needed parentheses, or solve instead of writing an expression.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Write an expression for “subtract 4 from the product of 6 and 9.” Then describe 36 ÷ (8 − 2) in words.

Ways to Teach It
Build expressions with number, operation, and parenthesis cards for teacher-read situations, then compare arrangements with a partner.
Prompt: “How are 6 × (10 + 2) and 6 × 10 + 2 described differently?” Students write and defend both descriptions.
Play a matching game pairing expression cards with phrase cards, including distractors that change grouping or reverse subtraction and division.
Use a grocery ad to write expressions for buying equal-priced items, adding a fixed fee, or subtracting a coupon.
