Florida B.E.S.T. MA.912.AR.1.1

MathGrades 9–12Interpret and rewrite algebraic expressions and equations in equivalent forms.

The Standard

Identify and interpret parts of an equation or expression that represent a quantity in terms of a mathematical or real-world context, including viewing one or more of its parts as a single entity.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify terms, factors, coefficients, constants, and grouped expressions within equations or expressions. They explain what each part represents and treat a grouped part as one quantity when useful.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly name and group meaningful parts, including a sum or product treated as one quantity. They explain each part using the context, units, and mathematical relationships.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every symbol as a separate quantity instead of grouping a part such as 3(x + 5). They may confuse coefficients with constants or ignore units and context.

How to Assess It

Give students C = 25 + 8h for a bike rental. Ask what 8h, 25, and the whole expression represent.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs algebra tiles to build 3(x + 2), then label the factor, grouped quantity, terms, and total value.

  2. Ask students to explain how 5(n + 4) and 5n + 20 tell the same story about five ticket bundles.

  3. Play a matching game with expression cards, highlighted parts, and context cards that describe what each highlighted part represents.

  4. Use P = 12m + 40 for a phone plan, and have students interpret 12m, 40, and P in dollars.
