What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn mathematical statements and real situations into two-step equations with one unknown. They solve using inverse operations with integers, fractions, and decimals, then check that the answer fits.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a two-step equation from a situation, solves it accurately, and shows each inverse operation. The student checks the answer by substitution and explains what it means in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse operations in the wrong order, mishandle negative signs, or compute incorrectly with fractions and decimals. They may also write an equation that does not match the context or forget to check the solution.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A taxi charges $3.50 plus $2.25 per mile. The total was $17.00. Write an equation and find the miles traveled.”

Ways to Teach It
Use algebra tiles and fraction strips to model equations such as 0.5x + 3 = 7, then connect each move to written steps.
Ask students to explain why subtracting 4 must come before dividing by 3 when solving 3x + 4 = 19.
Play equation match cards, pairing context cards, equation cards, and solution cards that include positive, negative, fractional, and decimal values.
Create phone plan problems with a fixed fee and per-gigabyte charge, then have students write equations to find unknown usage.
