What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students translate a mathematical condition into a one-step inequality and find all values that make it true. They show the solution with inequality notation or on a number line.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose the correct inverse operation, isolate the variable, and reverse the inequality sign when needed. They can graph the boundary correctly and test a value from the shaded region.

Common Misconceptions

Students may solve an inequality as if it were an equation and give only one value. They may forget to reverse the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number. Open and closed circles, boundary points, and shading direction are also often confused.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A number divided by negative 4 is greater than or equal to 6. Write the inequality, solve it, and graph the solution.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students inequality cards and tape number lines, then have them solve each card and place a marker at the correct boundary.

  2. Ask students to explain why dividing both sides by negative 3 changes the direction of the inequality sign.

  3. Play inequality match, where students pair situation cards, solved inequalities, and number line graphs.

  4. Have students write and solve an inequality for staying within a $40 budget after paying a fixed $12 fee.
