What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn word problems into algebraic statements with one unknown. They isolate the variable using inverse operations, check solutions, and show inequality solutions on a number line.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a situation or symbolic problem, a student chooses an equation or inequality and solves it accurately. The student preserves equality, reverses an inequality when needed, and checks the result in the original problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine unlike terms, apply an operation to only one side, or treat an inequality as having one answer. They often forget to reverse the inequality when multiplying or dividing by a negative, or graph an open endpoint as closed.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Solve 3x + 5 = 26, then solve and graph 3x + 5 ≤ 26. Require one sentence explaining how the graph shows all valid values.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use algebra tiles and a balance mat to model 3x + 5 = 20, then remove equal amounts and divide into groups.

  2. Students use a number-line example to answer: “Why does the inequality sign reverse after both sides are divided by a negative number?”

  3. Run a card match with equation or inequality cards, solution cards, and number-line graphs; pairs explain each completed set.

  4. Give students a $45 snack budget with an $8 delivery fee and $3 items, then write and solve an inequality for the number of items.
