What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students isolate the variable by undoing operations in reverse order. They reverse the inequality sign when dividing or multiplying by a negative, then show the solution with symbols and a number line.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can solve 5 - 2x > 13 and get x < -4. They use the correct endpoint, shade left, and verify the result with a test value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may forget to reverse the inequality sign after multiplying or dividing by a negative number. They may use a closed point for < or >, or shade the wrong direction on the number line.

How to Assess It

Give students -3x + 5 ≤ 17. Ask them to show each step, write the solution, graph it, and check one value.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 2x + 3 < 9 with algebra tiles on a balance mat, remove three, then split both sides into two groups.

  2. Have students explain why -2x > 8 becomes x < -4, using two test values as evidence.

  3. Play inequality match: students pair equation cards, solution cards, and number line cards, then justify one match to a partner.

  4. A freezer starts at 18°C and cools 3°C per hour; students find when it reaches 6°C or lower.
