What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn situations into equations such as 6x = -42 or x divided by 4 equals -3. They isolate the variable with an inverse operation, then substitute the integer answer to check it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a correct multiplication or division equation from a short context. They solve accurately with positive and negative integers and verify the result by substitution.

Common Misconceptions

Students may divide only one side of the equation or use the same operation instead of its inverse. They often lose a negative sign or misread x divided by -3 as -3x.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A $24 loss is shared equally among 6 players. Write an equation, solve for each player’s share, and check by substitution.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use integer chips and four labeled cups to model 4x = -12, then determine and verify the value in each cup.

  2. Discuss: Why must both sides of -5x = 30 be divided by -5, and how can substitution confirm the answer?

  3. Play a matching game pairing one-step integer equations, inverse-operation steps, solutions, and completed substitution checks.

  4. Model a $36 debt split equally among nine people by writing an equation, solving it, and explaining the negative answer.
