What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a situation into an equation with one unknown. They solve by undoing addition or subtraction and check that the answer fits the equation and context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write an equation that correctly represents the unknown and the given integer change. They isolate the variable, get the correct integer solution, and check it by substitution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ignore a negative sign or use the same operation shown instead of its inverse. They may change only one side of the equation or identify the wrong quantity as the unknown.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “After gaining 9 points, a player has 4 points. Write an equation for the starting score, solve it, and check your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Use two-color counters and balance mats to model x - 3 = -5, then add equal counters to both sides.
Ask students to explain why adding 6 to both sides solves x - 6 = -2, using words and a number line.
Play Equation Match: students pair integer equations, solution cards, and context cards, then verify each match by substitution.
Give a temperature story represented by x + 8 = 3, then have students find and interpret the starting temperature.
