What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify unknown quantities, operations, and the order in which calculations happen. They write expressions from situations and explain given expressions using clear words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a variable and represent each operation in the correct order. They use parentheses when needed and can explain what every number, variable, and operation represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse subtraction or division, especially with phrases such as “less than” and “divided into.” They may drop needed parentheses or add an equals sign when only an expression is needed.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Write an expression for “seven less than three times a number n.” Then describe 4(x + 2) in words.

Ways to Teach It
Give students number, variable, operation, and parentheses cards to build expressions for projected phrases, then compare their arrangements.
Ask, “How do x minus 5 and 5 minus x describe different situations?” Students write one context for each and discuss.
Run a matching game where students pair expression cards with description cards, then correct mismatches with a partner.
Give a snack shop menu and order scenarios, then have students write expressions for totals with unknown numbers of items.
