What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify two unknown quantities and write one linear equation for each relationship in a situation. They solve using substitution, elimination, or graphing, then interpret the intersection in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student chooses an efficient method, finds an ordered pair, and checks it in both equations. The student labels both values and explains whether the solution makes sense in the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine unlike terms or forget to multiply every term when preparing equations for elimination. They may switch coordinate meanings, report only one coordinate, or accept a pair that satisfies only one equation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A club sold 20 tickets for $130. Adult tickets cost $8 and student tickets cost $5. Write and solve a system, then check your answer.

Ways to Teach It
Use algebra tiles on two balance mats to model x+y=7 and x-y=1, then combine the mats to eliminate y.
Have pairs solve the same system by graphing and elimination, then defend which method is faster and why.
Run a card sort matching equation pairs, graphs, ordered-pair solutions, and short contexts; students justify each completed set.
Compare two phone plans with a table, equations, and graph, then find the usage where both plans cost the same.
