What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find values that make a linear equation and a nonlinear equation true at the same time. They use substitution or graphs to locate all solutions and interpret them as ordered pairs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose substitution or graphing and find every intersection. They give solutions as ordered pairs, check them in both equations, and explain what they mean in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may solve for x but forget to find the matching y-values. They may miss a second intersection, trust a rough graph as exact, or fail to check solutions in both equations.
How to Assess It
- Give the system y = x + 1 and y = x² - 1. Ask students to solve it, list all ordered pairs, and verify each pair.

Ways to Teach It
Graph a line and parabola on separate transparent sheets, overlay them, mark each intersection, then verify the points by substitution.
Ask students to compare graphing and substitution, then write when each method gives exact answers and when it gives estimates.
Run a card match with system cards, graph cards, and solution cards, requiring students to justify each completed set.
Model a ball’s parabolic path and a ramp’s linear height, then find where the ball reaches the ramp.
