What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a written pattern into a sequence rule using function notation. They choose an explicit rule or a recursive rule and include the correct starting term and input values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the first term, how values change, and what the input represents. They write a correct rule such as s(n)=18+4(n-1), or s(1)=18 and s(n)=s(n-1)+4.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the term number with the term value, causing an off-by-one error. They may omit the starting value in a recursive rule or confuse repeated addition with repeated multiplication.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Row 1 has 18 seats, and each new row has 4 more. Write explicit and recursive formulas for s(n).”

Ways to Teach It
Build growing tile figures, record each figure number and tile count, then write explicit and recursive rules for the pattern.
Ask students to explain when an explicit rule is more useful than a recursive rule, using one sequence as evidence.
Sort context cards with matching tables, explicit rules, and recursive rules, then check each match by finding the fifth term.
Model weekly savings that increase by a fixed amount, then write a function showing the total saved after n weeks.
