What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students evaluate the expression on each side of an equal sign. They compare the results, decide whether the equation is true or false, and explain why.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly evaluate each side using the proper order of operations. They label the equation true or false and support the decision with calculations or a clear comparison.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the equal sign as a signal to calculate only the left side. They may ignore operation order or assume an equation is true because both sides look similar.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Is 36 ÷ 4 + 7 = 5 × 3 true or false? Evaluate both sides and explain your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build both sides of equations with counters on a balance mat, then record whether the quantities match.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 6 × 4 + 3 = 30 − 3 is true without changing either side.

  3. Give partners equation cards to sort into true and false piles, then have them check each other’s calculations.

  4. Compare two snack-order calculations, such as 4 × $3 + $2 and $14, and explain whether the bill equation is accurate.
