Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students find the value on each side of an equal sign and compare the results. They explain whether the values match using objects, drawings, numbers, or words.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student correctly checks equations with the equal sign in different positions. The student can show why an equation is true or false using objects, drawings, number facts, or words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the equal sign means “the answer comes next” instead of “both sides have the same value.” They may judge an equation by its appearance without calculating both sides.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: Circle true or false for 5 + 3 = 8, 9 - 4 = 6, and 7 = 2 + 5. Explain one choice with a drawing or words.

Lesson moves

Give pairs counters and equation cards. Students build both sides on two mats, label each equation true or false, and fix false cards.
Display 7 = 10 - 3 and ask, “How can you prove both sides have the same value?” Students draw and write one sentence.
Play Equation Sort: students draw a card, solve both sides, and place it under True or False, earning a point for an explanation.
Show eight apples on one tray and five apples plus three on another. Students write an equation and explain whether the amounts match.
