What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the value on each side of a number sentence involving multiplication or division. They decide whether the two values are equal and explain their reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students calculate or model both sides accurately, then compare the results. They label the statement true or false and explain their decision with numbers, words, or a model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the equal sign as a signal to calculate rather than a claim that both sides have the same value. They may check only one side or assume different operations cannot produce equal results.

How to Assess It

Give the exit ticket: “Is 6 × 4 = 48 ÷ 2 true or false? Show how you know.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters and equation cards, then have students build both sides and place each card under True or False.

  2. Ask, “Jordan says 5 × 6 = 60 ÷ 2. Is Jordan correct?” Students write a two-sentence explanation.

  3. Play Equation Sort Relay using cards such as 3 × 8 = 6 × 4 and 36 ÷ 4 = 2 × 5.

  4. Compare equal snack totals, such as 4 bags with 6 crackers and 24 crackers shared among one group, then write an equation.
