What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students replace each variable with its given value and rewrite the expression. They then calculate using the correct order of operations, including exponents and parentheses.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly rewrite an expression with values in place of variables. They use parentheses, exponents, multiplication, addition, and subtraction in the correct order and show clear steps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a variable as a label instead of replacing it with the given number. They may ignore order of operations, mishandle exponents, or forget parentheses around negative values.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Evaluate 3x² - 2(y + 1) when x = -2 and y = 4. Require students to show the substitution step.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs variable cards and number cards, then have them substitute, rewrite, and solve expressions on mini whiteboards.
Ask students to explain why negative substitutions need parentheses by comparing x² when x = -3 with the expression -3².
Play expression relay: teams draw a value card, evaluate the same expression, and earn a point only when every step is correct.
Use c = 4.50 and t = 0.75 to evaluate c + 3t as the cost of admission and three ride tickets.
