What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use the distributive property, combine like terms, and factor out common factors. They recognize when two different-looking expressions have the same value for every allowed variable value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can expand, combine like terms, and factor out a common factor without changing an expression's value. They can explain each step using a property and check the result by substitution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may distribute a factor to only the first term inside parentheses. They may combine terms with different variables or exponents. Negative signs often cause errors when removing parentheses.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite 3(2x - 5) + 4x in simplest form, then verify your result by substituting x = 2.

Ways to Teach It
Use algebra tiles to model 3(x + 2) + 2x, then rearrange the tiles to show 5x + 6.
Ask students whether 4(x + 3) and 4x + 3 are equivalent, then have them justify their answer in writing.
Give pairs a card sort with expanded, simplified, and factored expressions that must be matched into equivalent sets.
Present a phone plan costing 25 + 4m dollars, then have students rewrite the cost for three people and simplify.
