What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students rewrite algebraic expressions without changing their value. They use properties of operations to expand, combine like terms, and simplify expressions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly use the distributive property, combine like terms, and manage positive and negative signs. They can verify equivalence by substituting the same value into both expressions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may combine unlike terms, such as turning 3x + 2 into 5x. They may distribute to only the first term or lose a negative sign. Some think equivalent expressions must look identical.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Rewrite 4(2x - 3) + 5x in simplest form, then explain how you know your expression is equivalent.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs algebra tiles to model 3(x + 2) and rearrange the tiles to show an equivalent expression.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 2(x + 5) and 2x + 10 produce the same value.

  3. Play an expression matching game where students pair expanded and simplified expressions, then check each match using a chosen value.

  4. Have students rewrite a cost expression such as 3(x + 4) to compare buying three identical meal bundles.
