What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply each term in one expression by each term in the other. They simplify the result by handling rational coefficients accurately and combining like terms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly expand expressions with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and negative coefficients. They combine like terms and can verify that a factored form and expanded form are equivalent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often multiply only the first terms and last terms, missing the two cross products. They may lose a negative sign or write x times x as 2x instead of x². Some add denominators when multiplying fractions or combine x² and x terms.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Expand and simplify (1/2x - 3)(2x + 5). Show all four partial products and the final expression.

Ways to Teach It
Build (2x - 3)(x + 4) with algebra tiles, then record each partial product and combine like terms.
Compare two expansions of (x - 2)(3x + 5), identify the incorrect line, and explain the error in writing.
Play a card match by pairing factored expressions with expanded forms, then verify each match by writing the four partial products.
Model a rectangle with side lengths (x + 1.5) meters and (2x - 0.5) meters, then write its area expression.
