What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply product, quotient, power, zero, and negative exponent rules to rewrite algebraic expressions. They combine like bases and produce simpler equivalent forms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students simplify products, quotients, and powers accurately, including expressions with zero and negative exponents. They show clear steps and recognize when two expressions are equivalent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add exponents when raising a power to a power, or multiply exponents when multiplying like bases. They may treat a negative exponent as a negative value or assume any base to the zero power equals zero.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Simplify (6x^-2y^3)^2 ÷ (3xy^-1), write the answer with positive exponents, and name each property used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs index cards showing expressions and simplified forms, then have students match each pair and justify the exponent property used.
Ask students to explain why x^-3 equals 1/x^3 and identify which values of x are not allowed.
Run an exponent relay where teams simplify one step at a time, passing the expression after each correctly applied property.
Use a compound interest formula and have students rewrite repeated factors as powers before comparing account balances.
