Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.3.AR.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.3.AR.2.1
Restate a division problem as a missing factor problem using the relationship between multiplication and division.
- MA.3.AR.2.2
Determine and explain whether an equation involving multiplication or division is true or false.
- MA.3.AR.2.3
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation, relating three whole numbers, with the unknown in any position.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students treat the equal sign as a statement that two amounts have the same value. They use equal groups, arrays, and fact families to represent multiplication and division and find unknown values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can decide whether equations are true and find a missing number on either side of the equal sign. They can model equal groups and connect multiplication facts to related division facts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the equal sign means “write the answer next” instead of “has the same value.” They may also assume multiplication always makes numbers larger or mix up sharing and grouping division.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Solve 4 × 6 = □ × 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = □. Explain how one equation shows equal values.

Ways to Teach It
Use counters and two balance mats to model 3 × 4 = 2 × 6, then divide the 12 counters into equal groups.
Ask students to explain in writing whether 18 ÷ 3 = 2 × 3 is true and how they know.
Play Fact Family Match by pairing multiplication cards with related division cards, such as 4 × 5 and 20 ÷ 5.
Have students pack 24 pretend juice boxes into trays of 6, then write matching multiplication and division equations.
