What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students rewrite a division equation as a multiplication equation with a missing factor. They use the known product and factor to find the quotient.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can rewrite 24 ÷ 6 = ? as 6 × ? = 24. They find the missing factor and explain that it is also the quotient.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply the dividend and divisor instead of finding the missing factor. They may reverse the numbers and write 24 × ? = 6 for 24 ÷ 6.

How to Assess It

Give the prompt: “Rewrite 35 ÷ 5 = ? as a multiplication equation, then solve.” Look for 5 × ? = 35 and an answer of 7.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students 24 counters to arrange into groups of 6, then have them write 6 × ? = 24.

  2. Ask, “How does 7 × 4 = 28 help you solve 28 ÷ 7?” and have students explain in writing.

  3. Play a matching game with division equation cards, missing factor equation cards, and quotient cards.

  4. Present a story about packing 30 oranges into bags of 5, then connect the number of bags to 5 × ? = 30.
