What Students Need to Do: Students identify equal groups and decide whether multiplication or division fits a problem. They solve using objects, drawings, arrays, equations, or known facts.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students solve equal-group, array, sharing, and grouping problems with multiplication or division. They use drawings, equations, or known facts and explain how multiplication and division are related.
Common Misconceptions: Students may add the two numbers in a problem instead of identifying equal groups. They may confuse the number of groups with the amount in each group, or rely only on keywords to choose an operation.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Four boxes hold 7 markers each. How many markers are there? Write a related division equation.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs 24 counters and cups, then have them model equal groups for 3 × 8 and 24 ÷ 3.
Ask students to explain how 5 × 6 = 30 helps solve 30 ÷ 5.
Play a fact-family card match using three number cards and the related multiplication and division equations.
Plan snack bags for 28 crackers, comparing how many bags are needed when each bag holds 4 or 7 crackers.
