What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make and describe collections with equal groups. They use arrays and repeated addition to find totals. They also decide whether a number splits into two equal groups or leaves one extra.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can model 4 groups of 3 and write 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. The student recognizes equal groups and explains whether a number splits evenly into two groups or leaves one extra.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count groups instead of all the objects. They may treat unequal groups as multiplication or add the number of groups to the group size. Some think odd numbers can split into two equal whole number groups.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw 3 equal groups of 4, write a repeated addition equation, and find the total. Then ask whether 11 can form two equal groups.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 24 counters and have them build equal groups and arrays, then record each model with repeated addition.
Ask, "How are 4 groups of 3 different from 3 groups of 4, and how are they alike?"
Play Array Match: students pair a picture card with its equal groups phrase, repeated addition equation, and total.
Plan chair rows for 18 guests; students find different equal row arrangements and identify any leftovers.
