What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a quantity can be shared fairly between two groups. They show the sharing with objects, drawings, and addition equations, including any leftover item.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can split 14 objects into groups of 7 and write 7 + 7 = 14. For 15 objects, the student can show two groups of 7, one leftover, and write 7 + 7 + 1 = 15.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call a number even whenever they can make two groups, even if the groups have different amounts. They may also forget to include the leftover item in a drawing or equation.
How to Assess It
- Give students 12 and 13 counters. Ask them to split each amount between two circles, then write an addition equation for each split.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two cups and 15 counters, then have them test amounts from 6 through 15 by sharing counters equally between the cups.
Ask students to draw how 11 objects could be shared between two children, then explain what happens to the extra object.
Play a card sort where students match number cards to equal-pair drawings and addition equations.
Use socks from a classroom collection to decide which totals make complete pairs and which totals leave one sock without a partner.
