What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students multiply and divide integers accurately and efficiently. They use sign rules, work with absolute values, and connect multiplication facts to related division facts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately multiply and divide positive and negative integers without counters or a calculator. They determine the sign first, compute with absolute values, and check division using multiplication.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a negative answer always results when either factor is negative. They may also confuse multiplication and division sign rules with addition rules or think division by zero is allowed.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with four problems: −7 × 6, −8 × −5, 72 ÷ −9, and −63 ÷ −7. Ask students to solve each and explain one sign choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs red and black counters to model equal groups, then connect each model to a signed multiplication equation.

  2. Ask students to explain why a negative divided by a negative has a positive quotient using a related multiplication fact.

  3. Play Integer Sign Sprint with operation cards and integer cards, awarding one point for the correct sign and one for the value.

  4. Use gains and losses in a game score to write and solve integer multiplication and division problems.
