What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect a division expression to a fraction, such as 3 divided by 4 equals 3/4. They model equal sharing and explain the numerator and denominator.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can represent 5 divided by 8 as 5/8 and explain what each number means. They can model equal sharing with a drawing or objects.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the numbers and write 4/3 for 3 divided by 4. They may also think division must produce a whole number or a remainder.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Six granola bars are shared equally among eight students. How much does each student get?” Require an equation, fraction, and drawing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three paper strips to share equally among four students, then label each share and write the matching fraction.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why two pizzas shared among five people gives each person 2/5 of a pizza.

  3. Use matching cards with division expressions, fractions, sharing stories, and models, then have students justify each completed set.

  4. Plan equal servings for seven campers sharing four sandwiches, including a drawing and the fraction each camper receives.
