What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students count the objects in two groups, with each group having up to 20 objects. They decide which group has fewer, more, or the same number and use the matching comparison words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately count both groups, including an empty group. They use the correct comparison term and can explain their answer by counting or matching objects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge by object size, row length, or spacing instead of counting. They may confuse less than and greater than, or think an empty group cannot be compared.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show boxed dot groups with 0 and 4, 7 and 7, and 13 and 9 dots. Students label each pair less than, equal to, or greater than.

Ways to Teach It
Build two towers with linking cubes, count each, then place a less than, equal to, or greater than card between them.
Show two dot cards and ask, “Which group is less than, greater than, or equal to the other, and how do you know?”
Partners draw numeral cards, build matching counter groups, and earn a point for stating the correct comparison sentence.
Compare two baskets of classroom supplies, such as pencils and crayons, by counting and labeling the groups.
