What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find numbers from 0 through 20 on a number line. They put numbers in order by moving from left to right. They compare two numbers using less than, greater than, or equal to.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can point to any given number from 0 through 20 on a number line. The student can arrange several numbers and correctly describe each comparison using less than, greater than, or equal to.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a longer written numeral, such as 10, is smaller because it begins with 1. They may reverse the number line direction or use greater than and less than incorrectly.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Mark 7 and 14 on a number line, circle the larger number, and complete, “14 is ___ than 7.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs number cards and a floor number line, then have students stand on each number and identify which position is farther right.

  2. Ask, “How does a number line help you decide whether 8 is less than 13?” and have students draw their explanation.

  3. Play Number Line War: partners turn over cards, place counters on a number line, and keep both cards if they name the comparison correctly.

  4. Show two classroom supply bins with up to 20 items, then have students count, compare, and write a matching comparison sentence.
