What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find and name where an object sits in an ordered row of up to five objects. They use first, second, third, fourth, and fifth from a clear starting point.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a row of up to five items, students name the place of any item from the stated starting end. They also place an object in a requested position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the objects but give the total instead of the position. They may start from the wrong end or confuse second, third, and fifth.
How to Assess It
- Show five animals in a row and say, “Circle the third animal, then put an X under the fifth animal.”

Ways to Teach It
Line up five toy cars, then have students move a named car into the first, third, or fifth place.
Show five children in a line and ask, “Who is second, and how do you know where to begin counting?”
Play Ordinal Simon Says: “Touch the fourth block” or “Put a counter on the second space.”
Study a lunch line or race picture and name who is first through fifth, using a clear starting point.
