What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students continue number sequences from any given starting point. They count in either direction and follow equal-jump patterns of two or five within the assigned ranges.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name numbers before and after a given number without restarting at 1. The student accurately completes sequences such as 8, 10, 12 and 35, 40, 45.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may restart at 1 instead of continuing from the given number. They often stumble when crossing a decade, especially backward. Some mix the patterns for jumps of two and five.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Complete 98, 99, __, __; 71, 70, __, __; 6, 8, __, __; and 45, 50, __, __.

Ways to Teach It
Lay numeral cards from 0 to 120 on the floor, then have students step forward, backward, by twos, or by fives.
Ask, “What changes and what stays the same when you count by fives?” Students explain using two example sequences.
Play Number Path: draw a starting number and direction card, then say the next five numbers correctly to keep the card.
Give students nickels and have them count the total value by fives until they reach one dollar.
