MA.K.NSO.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

• MA.K.NSO.2.1

  Recite the number names to 100 by ones and by tens. Starting at a given number, count forward within 100 and backward within 20.

• MA.K.NSO.2.2

  Represent whole numbers from 10 to 20, using a unit of ten and a group of ones, with objects, drawings and expressions or equations.

• MA.K.NSO.2.3

  Locate, order and compare numbers from 0 to 20 using the number line and terms less than, equal to or greater than.

What Students Need to Do

Students say number names in order to 100, starting at 1 or from a given number. They group objects into tens and ones to describe two-digit numbers.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can count forward to 100 and continue from a number such as 47. The student can build or draw a number such as 63 as 6 tens and 3 ones.

Common Misconceptions

Students may skip numbers at decade changes, such as moving from 39 to 50. They may reverse teen numbers or think 42 means 2 tens and 4 ones. Some count objects correctly but do not group them into tens and ones.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to count from 36 to 50. Then give the student 43 counters and ask them to show 43 using groups of ten and leftover ones.

   Build 27 with linking cubes, snap two trains of ten, and leave seven single cubes.

   Ask, "How are 28 and 82 different?" Students draw tens and ones, then explain their drawings to a partner.

   Play Missing Number by displaying five consecutive number cards with one card hidden for students to identify.

   Take inventory of classroom crayons, placing each group of ten in a cup and recording the tens and leftover ones.
