What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make teen numbers with one group of ten and extra ones. They show the same number with objects, drawings, and equations such as 10 + 4 = 14.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build and draw any number from 10 through 20 as one ten and some ones. The student can match the model to an equation such as 10 + 6 = 16.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every object as a separate one and miss the group of ten. They may reverse digits, call 14 “forty-one,” or write 10 + 4 = 104.

How to Assess It

Give students 17 counters and ask them to show one group of ten, draw the model, and complete 10 + __ = __.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs craft sticks and rubber bands, then call out teen numbers for students to build with one bundle of ten and loose sticks.

  2. Display a model of 14 and ask students to write or explain how the ten and four ones show the number.

  3. Play Teen Number Match with cards showing numerals, ten-frame drawings, object groups, and equations such as 10 + 8 = 18.

  4. Count 13 crayons, place ten in a box, and leave three outside to show how classroom supplies can be grouped.
