What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students say number names in order from different starting points, rather than always beginning at one. They count backward with numbers through 20 and count by tens to 100.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students count smoothly without restarting at one. They handle decade changes, name the tens in order, and count backward from any number through 20.

Common Misconceptions

Students may skip or repeat numbers when crossing from 29 to 30 or 59 to 60. They may confuse number names such as thirteen and thirty. When counting backward, some students reverse digits instead of following the number sequence.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to count from 47 to 53, count backward from 16 to 10, then name the tens from 10 through 100.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students a hundred chart and counter, call a starting number, then have them slide forward or backward while counting aloud.

  2. Ask, "What comes after 39, and how do you know?" Students explain what changes when the count reaches a new group of ten.

  3. Play Number Line Hop: students draw a starting card and direction card, then hop and count the stated number of spaces.

  4. Bundle craft sticks into groups of ten, then count the bundles aloud from 10 to 100 as if checking classroom supplies.
