What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify parts of an object that can be measured, such as its length, height, width, or weight. They describe more than one measurable feature of the same object.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can examine a classroom object and name at least two features that could be measured. The student uses words such as long, short, heavy, light, tall, or wide appropriately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name color, shape, or texture instead of a feature that can be measured. They may also assume bigger objects are always heavier or name only one feature.

How to Assess It

Hand each student a book and ask, “Name two things about this book that we could measure.” Listen for answers such as length, width, thickness, or weight.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a pencil, block, and book; students handle each item and name two measurable features on sticky notes.

  2. Ask, “What could we measure about your shoe?” and chart answers under length, width, height, and weight.

  3. Play Attribute Hunt by naming a measurable feature; students point to a matching object and explain their choice.

  4. Examine a lunchbox and discuss which measurements help decide whether a sandwich, bottle, and snack will fit.
