The standard
Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

What this standard means
Students need to notice and name things they can measure about an object, such as how long, tall, short, heavy, light, wide, or small it is. They should describe more than one feature of the same object, not just say its color or name.
Mastery looks like a child picking up a pencil and saying it is long, light, and thin. Students often get stuck using non-measurement words like pretty or blue, or they compare two objects before they can describe one object clearly.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on: Give each child a classroom object and have them tell a partner two measurable words that describe it.
- Prompt: Show a shoe and ask, “What can we measure about this shoe besides its color?”
- Quick assessment: Hold up a block and ask each student to name one measurable attribute before lining up.
- Real-world connection: At snack time, compare one cracker by saying whether it is small, thin, wide, light, or long.
