CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A.2

MathKDescribe and compare measurable attributes.

The standard

Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference.

What this standard means

Students need to compare two real objects using one shared attribute, such as length, height, weight, or capacity. They should use words like taller, shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, more, and less while looking at or handling the objects directly.

Mastery looks like choosing the attribute, lining up or holding objects fairly, and saying a clear comparison sentence. Students often get stuck when objects differ in more than one way, when they compare by sight only, or when they use bigger to mean every kind of measurement.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs a pencil and a crayon, have them line up the ends, then say which is longer and which is shorter.
  • Ask, “How can we prove which tower is taller?” after showing two cube towers with different bases.
  • Show two classroom objects and have students point to the heavier, longer, or taller one, then explain their choice in one sentence.
  • Compare two lunch containers and ask which one holds more crackers, then test by pouring the crackers from one into the other.
