What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students directly compare two objects that share an attribute, such as length, height, or weight. They use comparison words to describe which has more or less.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place or hold two objects so the chosen attribute can be compared fairly. They correctly describe one as longer, shorter, taller, heavier, or lighter than the other.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge length without lining up the objects at one end. They may confuse taller with bigger, or switch comparison words such as longer and shorter.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a pencil and a crayon. Ask, "Which is longer, and how did you check?"

Give pairs two ribbons, blocks, or classroom objects to align and compare by length, height, or weight.
Show two objects and ask, "Which has more length, and what could we do to prove it?"
Play Comparison Hunt, where students find an object shorter, longer, lighter, or heavier than a named classroom item.
Compare two lunch containers by height, then discuss which one fits more easily on a short refrigerator shelf.
