CCSS.Math.Content.K.MD.A
The standard
Describe and compare measurable attributes.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to notice things they can measure, like length, height, weight, and capacity. They should use clear words such as longer, shorter, taller, heavier, lighter, holds more, and holds less. They compare two objects directly, not by guessing from across the room.
Mastery looks like a child placing two crayons side by side and saying which is longer, or holding two objects and explaining which feels heavier. Students often mix up height and length, compare objects that are not lined up, or use vague words like bigger without saying what attribute they mean.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs of students a crayon, pencil, cube tower, and book, then have them sort and compare by length, height, and weight.
- Ask, "Which object is bigger, and what kind of bigger do you mean," using a shoe and a water bottle.
- Show two classroom objects for ten seconds, then ask students to name one measurable attribute and compare it with a partner.
- Have students compare lunch containers or water bottles by which holds more, holds less, is taller, or is heavier.
