CCSS.Math.Content.HSS-ID.A.1
The standard
Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to take a set of numerical data and show it clearly on a number line using dot plots, histograms, and box plots. They should know which plot fits the data and what each part of the plot means.
Mastery looks like choosing a reasonable scale, placing values accurately, grouping data correctly for histograms, and finding median, quartiles, range, and outliers for box plots. Students often get stuck with bin widths, uneven scales, and mixing up quartiles with minimum and maximum values.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs a small data set of class commute times and have them make a dot plot, histogram, and box plot on grid paper.
- Ask students, Which display best shows the spread of the data, and what information is harder to see in the other two?
- Show a flawed histogram with uneven bins and ask students to identify two errors and fix the display.
- Use recent sports scores, daily temperatures, or phone screen time data to compare how different plots show the same real numbers.
