What this standard means
Students need to count mixed coins and dollar bills, then use that value to solve simple word problems. They should know each coin’s value, combine coins in a sensible order, and write answers with either the dollar sign or cent symbol.
Mastery looks like choosing the right operation from the story, counting money accurately, and labeling the answer correctly. Students often get stuck switching between coin names and values, counting by 25s, and deciding when to use dollars or cents. Some count the number of coins instead of the value.
Ways to teach it
- Set up a pretend store with price tags under one dollar, coin cups, and dollar bills for students to buy two items and find the total.
- Ask students to write and solve: Mia has 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 4 pennies, what could she buy from our class store?
- Show 3 quarters, 1 nickel, and 2 pennies, then have students write the value on a whiteboard using the cent symbol.
- Use a snack menu with real prices, and ask students to choose items they could buy with $1.00.
