What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify bills and coins, recall their values, and add mixed amounts. They solve short money problems and use the dollar sign and cent sign correctly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students find the value of mixed bills and coins by grouping and adding. They solve simple money stories and write amounts correctly, such as 49¢ or $1.49.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count coins instead of counting their values, or assume a larger coin is worth more. They may write 35¢ as $35 or use both symbols together as $0.35¢.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “Mia has one quarter, two dimes, and four pennies. How much money does she have? Write the amount correctly.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs play coins and bills, then have them build and label amounts from money story cards.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why three dimes are worth more than three pennies.

  3. Play Money Match, where students pair coin collections with amount cards and check each match with a partner.

  4. Set up a classroom store with labeled items, and have students choose purchases and count the money needed.
