Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

What This Standard Means
Students need to use standard English grammar on purpose when they write and speak. In grade 8, that usually means controlling verbals, active and passive voice, mood, sentence structure, agreement, and pronoun clarity. They should also be able to explain why one version is clearer or more correct than another.
Mastery looks like clean, readable sentences in essays, discussions, and presentations, not just correct answers on worksheets. Students often get stuck when sentences get longer. Watch for dangling phrases, vague pronouns, verb tense shifts, and passive voice used by accident.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students sort sentence strips into correct, awkward, and incorrect groups, then revise the awkward and incorrect ones in pairs.
- Ask students to explain which sentence sounds more formal and why, using two versions of the same classroom announcement.
- Give a five-sentence exit ticket with one grammar problem in each sentence for students to find and fix.
- Bring in a short school email or news paragraph, then have students revise it for clearer grammar and stronger sentence control.
