ELAKindergartenConventions of Standard English

The Standard

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Language Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to speak and write in ways that make sense to a listener or reader. In kindergarten, that means using complete thoughts, naming people and things, using action words, adding describing words, and using common prepositions like in, on, under, and beside.

Mastery looks like a child saying or writing a clear sentence such as “The brown dog runs under the table.” Students often get stuck using fragments, leaving out verbs, mixing up word order, or using vague words like “it” without telling what “it” means.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs toy animals and blocks, then have them say and build sentences like “The bear is under the bridge.”
  • Prompt: Show a picture and ask, “Who is in the picture, what are they doing, and where are they?”
  • Quick assessment: Ask each child to describe one classroom object using a noun, an adjective, and a position word.
  • Real-world connection: During cleanup, have students give clear directions, such as “Put the red crayon in the cup.”
