What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students speak and write using grade-level grammar. They choose correct word forms and combine words into clear, complete sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use correct nouns, pronouns, verb forms, adjectives, and adverbs in speech and writing. They produce complete simple and compound sentences and correct common grammar errors.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use forms such as “childs,” “goed,” or “hisself.” They may write fragments, join ideas without conjunctions, or confuse adjectives and adverbs.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Fix the sentence: The childs goed outside, and they played happy.” Ask students to rewrite it and circle each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards for nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, then have them build and revise complete sentences.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences about recess, including an irregular past-tense verb and one compound sentence.

  3. Play a grammar relay where teams correct one error on each sentence card before passing it to the next player.

  4. Have students edit a short classroom announcement for noun, pronoun, verb, and sentence errors before reading it aloud.
