Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

What This Standard Means
Students need to use grade-level grammar when they speak and write. That means forming complete sentences, using nouns and verbs correctly, choosing the right pronouns, making simple and compound sentences, and using adjectives and adverbs with growing control.
Mastery looks like a student rereading a sentence and fixing grammar without heavy prompting. They can explain why a word choice or sentence sounds right. Common sticking points are verb tense, pronoun clarity, irregular plural nouns, and sentence fragments that sound fine in speech but do not work in writing.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs sentence strips with mixed-up words, then have them build complete sentences and label the noun, verb, adjective, and adverb.
- Ask students to revise this sentence: The dog run fast, then explain what they changed and why.
- Use a three-sentence exit ticket where students circle the correct verb, fix a pronoun, and combine two short sentences.
- Bring in a school lunch menu and have students write three complete sentences describing foods with adjectives and correct plural nouns.
