CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.1a
The Standard
Use collective nouns (e.g., group).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to know that some nouns name a group of people, animals, or things. They should be able to spot words like team, class, family, herd, bunch, and flock, then use them correctly in spoken and written sentences.
Mastery looks like choosing a collective noun that fits the group and writing a clear sentence with it. Students often mix up one item with the group word, such as bird and flock, or use a group word with the wrong noun, like a flock of cows.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give students picture cards of animals, people, and objects, then have them match each set to cards labeled herd, team, class, and bunch.
- Prompt: Write and discuss, “Our class is like a team because…” and have students include one collective noun in their answer.
- Quick assessment: Show five pictures and ask students to write the best collective noun for each group on a sticky note.
- Real-world connection: During morning meeting, have students name groups they saw today, such as a family, a line, a crowd, or a class.
