The Standard

Form and use regular and irregular plural nouns.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to make nouns plural correctly in speech and writing. They should know common regular patterns, like adding s or es, and common irregular forms, like child to children, mouse to mice, and foot to feet.

Mastery looks like using the right plural noun in a sentence without guessing from sound alone. Students often overapply the regular rule, writing mans, childs, or mouses. They may also mix up words that do not change, like deer or sheep, or forget spelling changes like baby to babies.

Ways to Teach It

  • Sort noun cards into add s, add es, change y to ies, irregular, and no change, then write one sentence from each group.
  • Ask students to write about a strange pet shop using at least five plural nouns, including two irregular plurals.
  • Show ten singular nouns on the board and have students write the plural form on whiteboards in one minute.
  • Use a grocery receipt or classroom supply list and have students rewrite items as plural nouns, like box to boxes and shelf to shelves.
