CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.1e
The Standard
Use adjectives and adverbs, and choose between them depending on what is to be modified.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to describe nouns with adjectives and verbs with adverbs. They should know that adjectives tell what kind, which one, or how many. Adverbs often tell how, when, or where an action happens.
Mastery looks like choosing the right word for the job in speech and writing: “a quiet dog” but “walked quietly.” Students often get stuck by using an adjective after a verb, like “ran quick,” or by thinking every describing word works anywhere in the sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give pairs noun cards, verb cards, adjective cards, and adverb cards, then have them build and read correct silly sentences.
- Writing prompt: Write about a playground game using three adjectives for things and three adverbs for actions.
- Quick assessment: Show five sentences with blanks, and have students choose an adjective or adverb from a word bank.
- Real-world connection: Read a lunch menu or weather report, and circle words that describe things and words that describe actions.
