CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1f
The Standard
Use frequently occurring adjectives.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to use common describing words to tell more about nouns. They should add words for color, size, number, shape, feeling, and opinion, such as red, tiny, three, round, happy, or funny. They need to speak and write these words in simple sentences.
Mastery looks like a student choosing an adjective that fits the noun and makes the sentence clearer. Students often name the noun again instead of describing it, or they use vague words like good, bad, or nice. Some forget that the adjective usually comes before the noun.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a bag of classroom objects and have them label each with two sticky-note adjectives, such as smooth, blue, small, or sharp.
- Ask students to finish the sentence, “I found a ___ animal,” then explain why that word fits.
- Show a picture and have students write one noun phrase with an adjective, then underline the adjective.
- Read a lunch menu and have students add adjectives to foods, such as crunchy carrots, cold milk, or spicy soup.
