CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1g
The Standard
Use frequently occurring conjunctions (e.g., and, but, or, so, because).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to join words and simple ideas with common joining words. They should understand that each word shows a different relationship, such as adding more, showing a choice, giving a reason, or showing a result.
Mastery looks like using these words correctly in speech and in short written sentences. Students often overuse one word for every join, especially “and.” They may also make sentence fragments after the joining word, or choose a word that does not match the meaning they want.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students sentence strips and conjunction cards, then have them physically connect two short sentences that make sense together.
- Ask students to finish: “I wanted to play outside, but...” and explain why their ending fits.
- Read five student sentences aloud and have students hold up a card showing the joining word that best completes each one.
- Show a lunch menu and ask students to say choices using “or,” reasons using “because,” and extra items using “and.”
