CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1i
The Standard
Use frequently occurring prepositions (e.g., during, beyond, toward).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to use common position and direction words correctly in speech and writing. They should understand words like during, beyond, toward, under, over, before, after, near, and between, then place them in sentences so the meaning is clear.
Mastery looks like a student saying or writing a sentence such as, “The cat ran toward the door” or “We read during snack.” Students often mix up location words, leave out the object after the preposition, or use a preposition that sounds right but does not match the meaning.
Ways to Teach It
- Place a toy bear around a box and have students say and write sentences like, “The bear is under the box.”
- Ask students to finish the sentence, “I walked toward ___ because ___,” then share with a partner.
- Show a picture and ask students to circle the sentence that uses the preposition correctly.
- Have students describe where things are in the classroom using words like behind, beside, near, and beyond.
