Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to understand and use common location and direction words in speech and early writing. They should be able to follow directions with words like in, on, under, to, from, with, and by, then use those words to describe where something is or where it is going.
Mastery looks like a child saying, “The bear is on the chair,” or writing a simple sentence with a correct preposition. Students often mix up similar words, leave the preposition out, or know the word when hearing it but not use it on their own.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give each child a cup and cube, then call directions like “put the cube in the cup” and “put it by the cup.”
- Prompt: Show a picture of a messy room and ask, “Where is the cat?” then have students answer using a preposition.
- Quick assessment: Hand students a bear counter and a box, then ask them to show “on,” “in,” “under,” and “beside.”
- Real-world connection: During cleanup, ask students to say where items go, such as “crayons in the bin” or “books on the shelf.”
