CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.1c
The Standard
Use reflexive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves).
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to use reflexive pronouns correctly in speaking and writing. They should know words like myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves. They need to match the pronoun to the subject, like I made it myself and They packed the bags themselves.
Mastery looks like choosing the right reflexive pronoun without guessing. Students often mix up hisself or theirselves, or use a reflexive pronoun when a regular pronoun is needed, like Give it to myself instead of Give it to me.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give pairs subject cards and reflexive pronoun cards, then have them build and read correct sentences aloud.
- Writing prompt: Write three sentences about things you can do by yourself, using myself, ourselves, or themselves correctly.
- Quick assessment: Display five sentences with missing pronouns, and have students write the correct reflexive pronoun on mini whiteboards.
- Real-world connection: Have students describe classroom jobs, such as We cleaned the tables ourselves or She sharpened the pencils herself.
